In 1992 Chris started his career driving racing karts in Illinois. Chris won the Track Championship at Norway Speedway in 1993. Chris decided in 1995 it was time for a change as he stepped up to a full size racecar. This was in the modified division at Hales Corners Speedway in Milwaukee, WI. His first year in the division earned him the "Rookie of the Year Award" finishing 4th in points with one feature win. His second year in the Modified division found him finishing 5th in points with two feature wins.

The 1997 season was a dream come true for Chris, as he finally found himself sitting behind the wheel of a Dirt Latemodel. That was an exciting year as he captured a fast time in qualifying on his 3rd night of racing and ended fifth in points. Chris earned the "Rookie of the Year Award" at Hales Corners Speedway and had one feature win. In Chris' second year of racing at Hales Corners he made a run at the championship, but came up one position short. That year Chris earned a second in points and two feature wins. His performance also earned him the "Driver of the Year Award".

In 1999 Chris finished third in points at Hales Corners with some very consistent finishes. The 2000 racing season was very special for Chris as he captured his first Wally Jors Classic feature win. What made it even more special for him than just winning, was that his father Gregg won the very first Jors race in 1977. That year he finished fourth in points. Since that season, Chris has expanded his horizons by choosing not to race exclusively at Hales Corners, but rather travel to other tracks to gain more experience and try new things. Although, not full time at Hales Corners, Chris was able to finish third in points in 2001, and fifth in 2002 and 2003.

2004 was a new start for the Carlson Racing team. Taking on racing full-time, the team competed in over seventy races that season, and a top ten point's finish in the grueling UMP Summer Nationals. The Summer Nationals involved racing across the Midwest for 26 nights of racing in 28 calendar days. During that season the team had several wins and numerous top five finishes. In 2005 Carlson Racing changed its program to compete in the Wissota racing series, and to race weekly at race tracks in Northern Wisconsin. The team made a strong run at the points championship at Antigo Speedway, however flipping the car at Shawano Speedway later in the year slowed down the progress of a track championship. The team was a consistent finisher and racked up many top five finishes in 2005.

2006 was another new adventure as the Carlson Racing Team hit the road following the Fastrak Racing Series. The race team won both the Mid-West and Mid-East Fastrak region Championships, and the Missouri State Championship. Consistent top five finishes and several wins made for an exciting 2006 racing season.

2007 is an entirely new venture for the Carlson Racing Team. The team will take to the pavement to race for the "Rookie of the Year" title at Slinger Super Speedway, and hit several ASA Midwest Touring races. We have not forgotten about our dirt racing, as the team has plans to compete in several Fastrak Racing Series events, and much more dirt events as the season unfolds..
